The Y. Kakayev International Oil and Gas University hosted an event dedicated to the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, which is annually observed on September 16 according to the United Nations General Assembly’s 1994 decision, marking the date of the signing of the Montreal Protocol in 1987.
This document, as part of ozone layer protection efforts, contributed to the phasing out of 99 percent of ozone-depleting substances. Over time, based on current positions, it has been repeatedly updated, clarified, and the list of substances subject to control expanded.
Throughout September, the Ozone Office at the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan conducts events dedicated to September 16. One such event was recently held for students and faculty of the Oil and Gas University. It was a lecture series about the importance of the ozone layer, threats to its destruction, and global climate protection measures, presented by Angela Gaziyeva, a specialist from the Ozone Office.
Alongside this, Turkmenistan’s contribution to regional cooperation was discussed. In particular, students were introduced to the country’s activities under the Tehran Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea and its protocols aimed at preventing oil spills, reducing pollution, preserving biodiversity, and conducting environmental expertise.
As part of the event, students learned about the concept of the “climate box” — an educational tool for teachers, schoolchildren, and students, as explained by Jemal Durdykova, an expert from the “Sustainable Cities” project of the environmental department and UNDP. This educational module for youth includes topics such as climate change adaptation, sustainable development, the continuity of environmental responsibility, and the significance of contributions not only from international organizations and governments but also from each individual.
Sustainable development and climate change became the central topics of subsequent discussions, which stimulated youth engagement in knowledge exchange and spreading information about protecting nature and the future of the planet.
