SARAHS FORTRESS IS THE HISTORICAL HERITAGE

Among the historical monuments preserved for millennia on the glorious land of Turkmenistan is the Sarahs Fortress. This fortress was not only built for military defense purposes but also held historical significance as a center of trade, economy, and culture. Located in the Sarahs etrap of Ahal velayat, this ancient fortress has witnessed the events of different eras throughout centuries.

The city of Sarahs is recognized as one of the ancient cultural centers of Central Asia. The first records about the Sarahs Fortress date back to the medieval period. A key feature of the fortress’s structure is that it was built in an rectangular frame style. The inclusion of Sarahs in the international trade network greatly contributed to the growth of its economy. At that time, Sarahs developed into a densely populated large city with a fortified inner town, covering an area of 120 hectares and surrounded by walls 12 meters high and 340×560 meters in length. The fortress was constructed with high walls and towers on its corners. Fortresses of this kind were widely used in those times to protect cities from enemies.

The fortress is an inseparable part of the historical heritage of the Turkmen people and still retains its value today. Studying, preserving, and promoting the Sarahs Fortress is of great importance for current and future generations.
