The 43rd General Conference of UNESCO is being held in the city of Samarkand, Republic of Uzbekistan. On October 29, 2025, the 12th Interregional Meeting of National Commissions for UNESCO of the Organization’s Member States took place as part of this conference. The Turkmen delegation at the meeting was represented by Ms. Ch. Rustemova, Executive Secretary of the National Commission of Turkmenistan for UNESCO.
The meeting was attended by the Deputy Directors-General of UNESCO, heads of relevant departments of the Organization, and representatives at the level of executive secretaries of the National Commissions for UNESCO of the Member States.
At the opening session, speeches were delivered by Mr. Xing Qu, Deputy Director-General of UNESCO, Assistant Director-General a.i for Priority Africa and External Relations; as well as Ms. Gayane Umerova, Chairperson of the National Commission of Uzbekistan for UNESCO, Chairperson of the Art and Culture Development Foundation of Uzbekistan, Head of the Department of Creative Economy and Tourism of the Administration of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
As part of the event, four thematic sessions were held: “Empowering Youth to Advance Peace, Human Rights, Social Inclusion, and Education for Sustainable Development”; “Connecting Cultures and Communities in the Digital Age: Heritage, Sustainable Tourism and the Silk Road”; “National Commissions as Strategic Allies: Working Together for Strategy, Programs and Partnerships”; “Sharing Best Practices in Building Inclusive Societies and Advancing Science for Sustainable Development.”
Ms. Ch. Rustemova, Executive Secretary of the National Commission of Turkmenistan for UNESCO, delivered a report during the discussions of the third session. In her speech, Ms. Rustemova highlighted the priority areas of the Commission’s activities and the importance of international cooperation in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. It was emphasized that Turkmenistan’s active participation in UNESCO’s work contributes to strengthening mutual understanding among peoples and promoting common goals in the fields of education, science, culture and communication.
Particular attention during the meeting was devoted to discussing important issues, including the review of reports, analysis of bilateral and multilateral initiatives, as well as matters related to improving the practice of interaction between regional structures and national commissions of UNESCO.
The latest interregional meeting demonstrated the firm commitment of the National Commissions for UNESCO to contribute to the ongoing implementation of UNESCO projects and to provide a platform for exchanging views on the role of national commissions in carrying out the Organization’s programs and its strategic transformation.
